Shannon Shoemaker

Today we celebrate our 1,000th post on the Albany Poets website with new poetry from one of the great poets who has been a part of our community since the beginning. Shannon Shoemaker has been coming out to open mics and events for a while and we have been bugging her to send in some of her work. Well, she finally did and we are happy to welcome her to the website.

Shannon has also been very involved with the Nitty Gritty Slam since last year and in the that time has earned a spot on the team as well as the nickname “In The Money” due to her many wins at the event. We will have to see how she fares next week at the Night of Champions slam at Valentine’s.

Shannon Shoemaker is a single mother as well as an “Out” poet. Shannon lives on a small farm in upstate NY with her family and a host of pets. She has been writing since her preteen days. She began reading at open mics in the Albany NY area about 12 years ago. Since then Shannon has been featured at many of Albanys’ local poetry venues. While Shannon is new to “Slam” poetry, she has been enjoying the challenge of writing for performance as well as the host of new friends she has made along the way. Shannon is grateful To Albany Poets and The Nitty Gritty Slam for their support and encouragement.

Head on over to Shannon’s brand new poets page to read the two poems that are up there (so far): He Said When In Doubt and True Story.

And for your viewing pleasure, here is a video of Shannon performing at the Professor Java’s Wide Open Mic last September.
