AP-Event-NGS-53

Join us upstairs at Valentine’s on Tuesday, September 3 for Nitty Gritty Slam #53, for the first slam of Season Three of NGS.

We will be back with our traditional “8-4-2” slam format right after our open mic for poetry and spoken word. This year we have some new rules, rotating hosts, and some exciting featured poets lined up. We cannot wait to get this new season started and being down the road to the 2014 National Poetry Slam in Oakland, CA.

Saymo The ChampAt the last slam we welcomed back Team Nitty Gritty from their trip to the National Poetry Slam in Boston (#35 in the country!) and crowned a new Champion of Champions in Saymo!

Now we are ready to start fresh. All of the points have been reset to zero and everyone is on a level playing field.

Who will be the first winner? Who will raise the bar and set their sights on #TeamNittyGritty 2014? All of those questions will be answered when we start Season Three at NGS #53.

Also, at Nitty Gritty Slam #53 you will have the opportunity to support the slam by purchasing Are You Like Writing Lyrics?, a chapbook from the poets who represented Albany and NGS in 2012 and 2013. Money that is raised from book purchases will be going into the NPS 2014 Fund to help send the team to Oakland next summer.

Albany Poets, Urban Guerilla Theatre, and The Frequency North Reading Series have brought slam back to Albany with the Nitty Gritty Slam.

NGS takes place at Valentine’s (17 New Scotland Ave.) on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday’s of each month.

If you’re not into slam, but want to get on stage and share your work, we have an open mic before the slam.

Sign up begins at 7:00pm, open mic starts at 7:30, and then Thom Francis starts the slam at 8:00pm.

Admission is $5.00 ($3.00 with student ID). This is an 18+ show.
