So much going on in the local literary, poetry, and spoken word community. Here is a look at all of the poetry events, readings, slams, and workshops coming up this week in the region.

 

Sunday, November 10

2:00 pm – Kevin Wilson signs and discusses, Sully’s Squad
The Book House of Stuyvesant Plaza, 1475 Western Avenue, Albany, NY
Sully’s Squad is not only a World War II epic, but also a moving coming-of-age tale, told through the eyes of fifteen-year-old Arty, who lies about his age to enlist, and a chance meeting in a cathedral garden with a young postulant Angelina turns into a romance.

3:00 pm – Poets’ Corner Open Mic

Monthly Open Mic for writers and readers of spoken word of all types every 2nd Sunday. Featured reader, then mic is open to all!

A weekly gathering with a new featured poet each week. Bring a dish to share if you’d like. Suggested: $4 / person

7:00 pm – 2nd Wednesday Poetry
C.R.E.A.T.E. Community Studios, 137 State Street, Schenectady, NY
Featured writers + open mic for poetry, short prose, and mixed media. Signups for the open mic start at 7:00, readings start at 7:30. Facilitated by Jackie Craven with rotating hosts. This month’s featured poets are Ken Holland and Mike Jurkovic.

Friday, November 15

7:00 pm – Connecting the Dots Story Slam
Dottie’s, 444 North Street, Pittsfield, MA
Story Slam? – A story slam is a storytelling competition open to anyone with a five-minute story to share on the event’s theme. Stories are scored by volunteer judges from the audience. Typical story slams are fast paced and high spirited with widely ranging responses to the theme. For November the theme is “Connecting the Dots.”

8:00 pm – Hudson Valley Writers’ Center Open Mic Night
Hudson Valley Writers’ Center, 300 Riverside Drive, Sleepy Hollow, NY
Featured Poets + open mike for poets, fiction writers, essayists with rotating hosts. Located in the restored Philipse Manor railroad station, which is approx. 30 miles north of midtown Manhattan and 2.6 miles north of the Tappan Zee Bridge.

 

Saturday, November 16

11:00 am – HVWG Poetry Contest Winners and Reading
