On Friday, November 2, 2018, at 7:00 p.m., HiLo Catskill presents the HiLo Spoken Word Revue, hosted by Karen Schoemer and cosponsored by Magpie Bookshop.
The HiLo Spoken Word Revue is a celebration of the live literary arts and features the work of local or locally connected writers of poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction. Appearing on November 2 are Ari Wolff, Norman Douglas, Jana Martin and a duo of Karen Schoemer and Mike Griffin. HiLo is located at 365 Main Street in Catskill, NY; the event is free.
Ari Wolff is a poet, visual artist, and educator living in the Hudson Valley. Her poems have appeared in The Offing, Hinchas de Poesia, [PANK], Storm Cellar, Whiskey Island, as wells as other journals. Her paintings are currently on view at Collar Works in Troy, NY. She works as a teaching artist at Morningside Community School and Berkshire Country Day.
Norman Douglas sets up a typewriter in public — sidewalks, fairs, markets, etc — to write original poems for all comers on any topic at any price. A utopist, he studies words — written, spoken, unsaid — to report on our neglected utopias. He doesn’t subscribe to individualism or hierarchy; science provides sufficient evidence that both defy nature’s laws. Douglas also writes essays, reviews, grants, documentation, stories and sometimes helps people to rebuild — mostly houses.
Jana Martin wrote Russian Lover and Other Stories, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, and Great Intentions, Good Inventions. She’s appeared in Women Who Rock anthology edited by Evelyn McDonnell, Feckless Cunt, the New York Times, Village Voice, Marie Claire, Glimmer Train, Mississippi Review, Spork, PostRoad and Entropy, among other publications. She’s a Pushcart nominee and a Glimmer Train New Writers awardee. She’s an editor on TheWeeklings.com. She was a founding member of the NYC punk band The Campfire Girls and the bassist and lead singer of The Rings.
Karen Schoemer is a poet, author, and performer living in Hudson, NY. Her poems have appeared or are forthcoming in La Presa, The Pine Hills Review, Up the River and Chronogram. She records and performs with several bands including Sky Furrows, Venture Lift, Jaded Azurites, and Detective Instinct.
Mike Griffin is a multi-instrumentalist from upstate NY. He has numerous releases of solo material under the name Parashi, and he is a member of the sprawling improvisational psych-rock band Burnt Hills. He plays guitar in Sky Furrows, with Karen Schoemer and fellow Burnt Hillians Eric Hardiman and Philip Donnelly. Griffin has played shows or collaborated with artists such as John Olson, Anthony Pasquarosa, Noise Nomads, Wet Tuna, Rambutan, Jason Lescalleet, and Stefan Christensen along with many others.
